Installation Art
Installation Art transforms an entire space and shapes how a viewer moves through and experiences a room. Many installations are designed for one particular space and lose their meaning or form entirely if relocated. In an installation, no medium is off-limits. Artists use everyday objects, natural materials like earth or water, light, sound, video, scent, even architecture itself.
An early example is the artist Ilya Kabakov who coined the term "total installation" to describe rooms transformed so completely that a viewer couldn't distinguish artwork from architecture.
Worth clarifying: every immersive artwork is essentially a form of installation, but not every installation is immersive in the digital, multisensory sense.
